Sometimes it’s nice to pull back the curtain and share a bit more about my work as a math consultant, and really a math intervention specialist, for the schools and districts I support across the US. This post contains a case study for you to view to get ideas about how to use a math consultant or get to know me and my services more to determine if I might be the right fit for your school or district.
Meet D84
Franklin Park School District 84 is located in Franklin Park, Illinois outside of Chicago. According to data pulled from US news and world reports, the specific school I supported in District 84 has 446 students, 78% minority student enrollment, and 32% of students scored at or above the proficient level.
Math Consultant Goals
District and school administration had two main goals with our initial scope of work
1. To see the strategies shown in the PD session being used in the classroom
2. To see more student collaboration and less teacher talk from the front of the classroom
Scope of Work
My initial contract had two parts:
Part 1: Initial 3 hour virtual PD including discussion of my “tier 1 instructional strategy” that I call, The Math Wars Method®
Part 2: Beginning the week after the virtual PD session I would begin a 3 week virtual coaching cycle with the teachers where we met one on one, once a week for three weeks in a row, to discuss implementation of the tier 1 instructional strategy
Results
We achieved both goals within one month of working together.
1. 100% of teachers reported using strategies from the PD session in their classroom - and it was clear from the one on one coaching session that they truly did use the strategies.
2. 100% of teachers showed proof of using the tier 1 instructional strategy which has a structured collaborative element so we confidently met the goal of getting more student collaboration and less teacher talk from the front of the classroom.
Additional Results
43% Increase in strategies to engage students. Teachers were asked, “I have strategies to engage students who struggle” in a pre and post PD/coaching survey and we saw a 43% increase in teachers having more strategies to engage all students
100% of teachers wanted to continue working with Juliana for either PD or one on one coaching. This data suggests teachers found our time together valuable and worthwhile, a huge win!
Further Work
After the positive initial results my contract was extended to support the in-person instructional coach in supporting her with supporting the teachers with the tier 1 instructional strategy. I think this is the perfect blend of virtual and in-person support and I’m excited to measure the impact at the end of the 24-25 school year.
